Coyotes can cause a tremendous amount of damage through their predation on livestock, family pets, and even agriculture. Coyotes eat small livestock, poultry, watermelon and certain truck and field crops

Coyote-rare color
Description: This black coyote is very rare as are albinos. But color commonly ranges across gray-brown-red.

  • N.Y.S. D.E.C. game commission officer Robert Doe confirmed that this was indeed a new New York state record coyote. Its official weight was 115 pounds, it is a very large male and was shot this (2005-6 in February '06)) regular deer season just out side the town of Hilton. (Hilton is just West of Rochester in Northern Monroe County) It has been spotted on several different occasions chasing deer & livestock, dogs, and cats.

  • Attack pets
  • Attack livestock
  • Eat watermelon
  • Human attacks, though rare, do occur

 

 

Coyote Control Methods

Habitat Modification

  • wire mesh and/or electric fences
  • Change herding management
  • pasture selection where coyote habitat is minimal
  • carrion removal
  • donkeys and llamas & guard dogs,
  • house young livestock; fall lambing or calving; synchronizing breeding of livestock; 

Repellents

  • Frightening Agent Sirens and strobe lights such as the Electronic Guard, propane exploders and vehicles or human effigies may temporarily deter wary animals. well-placed lights, such as above sheep corrals 

Trapping

  • foot hold traps and snares;

Cage trapping coyotes is extremely difficult. Catching two coyotes at the same time in a cage trap rises to the level of winning the PowerBall Lottery.
