WHAT ARE THE DUTIES? The Wildlife Specialist will conduct a wildlife damage management program and assist other Wildlife Specialists in the surrounding areas. The Specialist will carry out activities of managing problem wildlife in rural and urban areas. The Specialist will work with local agricultural producers to protect livestock, livestock feed, crops, and human health and safety by controlling predators, birds, beavers and other nuisance mammals. The Specialist will also work with County, State and Federal agencies to protect endangered salmon from predatory fish and birds. The position requires use of various control tools that may include pesticides, cage traps, leg-hold traps, conibear traps, shooting, aerial gunning, fishing with rod and reel, pyrotechnics and various non-lethal tools. The position requires the operation/maintenance of a government vehicle, power boats, laptop computer, and hand/power tools. The position requires excellent physical condition, as heavy lifting and walking are required. Adverse weather conditions such as heat, cold, and precipitation may be encountered.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE: APHIS is an emergency response agency. This means that all Agency employees may be asked or assigned to participate in rotating temporary duty assignments to support emergency programs at some time during their careers with APHIS. It is difficult to predict the frequency with which such emergency situations may occur – and could range from several emergencies in a year to none over the course of many years. In the event that you are called upon to support an emergency program, this may require irregular working hours, including overtime, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. While some emergency program support assignments may be able to be performed at the employee’s current duty station, in other cases employees may be asked to go on-site to a temporary duty station location. In addition, it may be necessary for employees to participate in multiple rotations to an emergency program assignment. Attempts will be made to keep disruption to the employee to a minimum.

The Missouri USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services program is recruiting a Wildlife Specialist (Biological Science Technician) to manage human/wildlife conflicts in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
This position is a full-time, 13 month term appointment with benefits, and a starting salary of $29,726 (AD-404-5). The term may be renewed after completion of a 12 month probationary period,

Purpose of Position:
Serve as the primary communication liaison between Interagency Field Team (IFT), agency staff, livestock operators, and the general public, and as the IFT leader for the reintroduction of the Mexican Wolf in New Mexico. Duties Include: Conduct extensive outreach activities directed toward landowners, public land grazing permitees, and other interested parties primarily through direct contacts, and develop original concepts and solutions to support successful reintroduction of Mexican wolves in New Mexico. Prioritize and allocate personnel and resources (supervise one wolf biologist) to conduct the necessary monitoring, management, and conservation of the Mexican wolf in a manner that demonstrates responsiveness to stakeholders needs and desires among permitees, landowners, general public, state and federal agencies. Alleviate wolf conflicts and coordinate actions with other agencies while recognizing the program's socio-economic effects on various stakeholders. Position Summary: The successful applicant will fulfill a functional allocation of 65% extension and 35% applied research. He/she will provide leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating extension programming statewide related to forest management, with special emphasis on its effects on wildlife populations and communities. Extension activities will include offering of short courses, training workshops, continuing education opportunities for practicing foresters and wildlife professionals, responding to phone and email inquiries from the public, and extension publications. Applied research should inform extension programming and will focus on forest ecosystem responses to management including collaborative efforts related to regeneration and silviculture, sustainable management of hardwood ecosystems, and changes in wildlife responses to management over time and space. Research and management on the woodlands at the Southeastern Purdue Ag Center (SEPAC), the largest forested tract (1,430 ac) managed by the department, is expected. Research products will include peer-reviewed publications and presentations at state and regional/national meetings.
Essential Responsibilities: Annually develop and implement extension programs targeting non-industrial private landowners and similar audiences on topics germane to improved management for forest and wildlife resources such as plantation forestry or the effects of deer on forest regeneration. Work with state agencies to conduct continuing education workshops for practicing forestry and wildlife professionals. Develop demonstration sites at SEPAC and elsewhere as appropriate. Prepare for publication 3-4 extension products annually.
Qualifications: A Master's degree in Forestry or Wildlife preferred, with B.S. degree in Forestry (if Wildlife M.S.) or Wildlife (if Forestry M.S.). A demonstrated knowledge or interest in wildlife responses to forest management; research experience, especially regarding plantation management; ability to pursue external funding; and an ability to work in interdisciplinary teams such as the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center and the Sustainable Hardwood Ecosystems Area of Excellence are desired.

WHAT ARE THE DUTIES? The incumbent assists a wildlife damage
management program to efficiently and effectively reduce wildlife
damage adversely impacting livestock and other resources. The
position requires use of various control tools that may include the
use of snares, foothold traps, M-44 devices, denning, calling and
shooting, avicides, and various non-lethal tools. The position
requires the operation/maintenance of a government vehicle, field
camp, MIS lap top and other ground tools. The position requires
excellent physical condition as heavy lifting and walking is
required in steep and rough terrain. Adverse weather conditions such
as heat will be encountered.
ARE THERE SPECIAL CONDITIONS OR REQUIREMENTS?
* Must have a valid State Motor vehicle license
* Required to pass certified pesticide applicator examinations
* Must be qualified to use immobilization and euthanasia drugs and
obtain certification
*Carrying a firearm is a condition of Employment - In the passing of
the Lautenburg Amendment, Congress passed legislation which
prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of
domestic violence from possessing a firearm or ammunition. If
selected, you will be required to sign the form, “Inquiry for

meet this criteria.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE - APHIS is an emergency response agency. This
means that all Agency employees may be asked or assigned to
participate in rotating temporary duty assignments to support
emergency programs at some time during their careers with APHIS. It
is difficult to predict the frequency with which such emergency
situations may occur – and could range from several emergencies in a
year to none over the course of many years. In the event that you
are called upon to support an emergency program, this may require
irregular working hours, including overtime, and may include duties
other than those specified in your official position description.
While some emergency program support assignments may be able to be
performed at the employee’s current duty station, in other cases
employees may be asked to go on-site to a temporary duty station
location. In addition, it may be necessary for employees to
participate in multiple rotations to an emergency program
assignment. Attempts will be made to keep disruption to the employee
to a minimum.
